Book 3: The Dancer

Elena Gabaldon, shaking with dread, knew Davis Burwash walked behind her but she didn’t look back as, her nakedness covered by the black cape, she hurried toward the house. After what Davis had tried to do to her in the ruins, she certainly couldn’t remain in his house any longer. Despite Meg's need for her, she’d leave in the morning.

Elena slipped inside the front door as quietly as she could and crept up the front stairs, afraid a servant might see her if she used the back. She gained her room with a sigh of relief. After hiding the bundled shawl in a corner of her wardrobe, she poured water into the washbasin and dropped the cloak to the floor.

The door opened. Elena yelped, grabbing for the discarded cloak. She was partly relieved to find it was Stella, not Davis. Stella crossed to her and pulled aside the cloak, staring at her blood-smeared nakedness.

"Oh my God!" Stella exclaimed, shaking her head. "I told you to stay away from him."

Elena burst into tears. Once started, she couldn't stop. She cried while Stella washed the blood from her back and dabbed arnica on the thorn scratches, wept as Stella slid a nightgown over her head and led her toward the bed.

"Hush, now," Stella urged, patting her shoulder. "Get into bed. You need to rest.”
Elena obediently climbed onto the bed and took the handkerchief Stella handed her. "I can't stay in this house," she said between sobs.

Stella sighed. "No, not after this. I knew there'd be trouble with Davis but I didn't think he'd go so far as to force you. He'll hate himself for it and the sight of you will make it worse. You can't stay here. Meg will have a fit but I'll promise her you'll come to her after she's married to Warren and in her own house. You will, won't you?"

Elena nodded. She couldn't desert Meg entirely; Meg needed her. She wasn’t quite sure what Stella meant by “force.” Yes, Davis had hurt her, but she didn’t think he’d finished what he’d started to do. Which had been terrible enough. Best to avoid men entirely after this.

"I know you give your aunt money to live on," Stella continued, "but all I can offer is a job at my cantina in El Doblez until the marriage takes place. Ricardo Gomez manages the cantina for me now that his father's dead--I'll talk to him if you like."

"Thank you," Elena said, drying her eyes. A cantina, she thought. Tia Francesca will have a heart attack at the idea. "It's kind of you to help me," she added. "I don't mind working in a cantina but please don't tell my aunt."

Stella smiled. "I understand how she feels. Don't worry, Ricardo will see to it the men won't bother you and you can room with his mother, Lucita. She's my good friend. As for Davis--possibly you'll never forgive him but try to remember how badly he wanted you. Because he thought you'd given yourself to Rory, he was driven by lust and jealousy, a bad combination. They're violent creatures, men, and there's little a woman can do to change them. Put Davis from your mind, sleep if you can, I'll see to Meg."

Erasing Davis from her mind was impossible with all the wounds from the thorns still smarting. She certainly never wanted to come anywhere near him again, but forgetting what he’d done to her wouldn’t be easy. Forgive him? Never! After fretful tossing and turning, Elena's final thought as she slid over the border into sleep was that maybe Ricardo Gomez would let her dance in the cantina.

Now available: The Taste of Magic by Gina Rosavin

Adrian du Lac is not your average vampire. Nearly two-thousand years old, he uses immortality to his advantage. Though he lives the life of a successful European businessman, what he really wants is to rule the world.

Originally, he sought Katerina Romanov for her latent powers of witchcraft, but now that she’s come of age, his desires have changed. When Katerina succumbs to Adrian’s charms, some fear the vampire will become invincible. As du Lac’s enemies set out to destroy him once and for all, he and Katerina run the risk of losing each other forever.

"The Taste of Magic is one of the best books I have read in a long time. Gina Rosavin hooked me from the first page of the book and never let me go until the end. I was totally entertained by the by the see-saw motion of Adrian and Katerina relationship. The Taste of Magic is full of wonderful characters that are not what they seem on the surface, a wonderful plot. The story is full of action, intrigue, laughs and very hot sex scenes." ~ Fallen Angels Reviews: Recommended Read

"Gina Rosavin pens a well-crafted story that this reader thoroughly enjoyed. The dialogue is excellent, the passion intense, and the characters remarkably fashioned. With powerful wizards, vampires, and witches spells, this enchanting tale has about everything to please the reader. Bravo to Ms. Rosavin for an extraordinary read.” ~ The Romance Studio: 5 Stars

The Fixer

Book 2, The Interloper:

Stella came for Angelica's funeral and took over all the arrangements to Diarmid’s great relief. She never left, sending word to El Doblez for Lucita to send her belongings to the ranch and putting Lucita and her son in charge of the cantina.

Diarmid never mentioned marriage to her and she never indicated she expected him to. She took over the raising of Davis and Meg as "Aunt" Stella.

Diarmid saw to it that Davis learned all there was to know about running the ranch and when the lad turned eighteen, he sent him to Leland Stanford University, up near San Francisco. On the first morning after Davis came home for the summer in June of 1898, Diarmid rode with him around the property and, as usual, they argued.
"What's wrong with raising race horses?" Davis demanded, reining in his mount at the top of a rise overlooking the orange groves. "Mr. Stanford does very well training and racing his. It's true the horses might not show a profit immediately but--"

Diarmid’s snort cut off his son’s words. He halted his horse and scowled at Davis. "They're teaching you a load of nonsense up there at Leland Stanford University."

"How do you know it's nonsense?" Davis shot back. "You never let me try out any of my ideas. Some day I'll be running the ranch, you might let me have a chance at a few things now."

Diarmid didn't reply immediately. Davis take over from him? Not damn likely, as long as he was able to draw breath. Race horses! Couldn't the lad see raising such horses would be a poor investment, taking time and men away from what they did to bring in money? Not that his son was a fool, he was as bright as they came. Too bright, maybe, too eager. He needed someone with experience standing over him, showing him where he was wrong.

Hank Jarvis, Diarmid's lawyer and fishing friend, had been at him for years to include the ranch in the corporation that handled all his other properties.

"All you think about is hobbling me with legalities," Diarmid had grumbled the last time they met.

"Face it, you're not getting any younger, Darm," Hank told him. "If the ranch is part of the corporation, it'll be simple enough to set up a trusteeship until your boy's mature enough to know what to do. He's still a youngster, he'll need advice--unless you plan to outlive us all, Davis. included."

Diarmid had brushed Hank's words aside at the time but they'd come to mind often since. Davis and he didn't seem to see eye to eye on the management of the ranch or anything else. What would happen to his holdings if he died tomorrow and Davis took over? Never mind the cannery, the sugar refinery or the fruit packing warehouses--it was the land that mattered. The land must not be lost.

"To tell you the truth, Davie lad, I'm thinking of including the ranch in the corporation and setting up a trusteeship until you're old enough to run things," he told his son. "I won't live forever, you know."

Davis slanted him a disgusted look. "With all your old cronies as trustees, I won't ever have a chance to try out a new idea."

"Wait just one damn minute. I haven't decided who'll be--"

"I'll bet I can name them right now. Jarvis, Manuelo Amato, Stein and, let's see, Bothwick's dead so probably his son, Warren. Right?"

Now available: Golden Chances Book 1 - The Bastard by Jane Toombs

A fast-moving, dramatic California saga about the people--Spanish, Anglo, Mexican and Indian who struggled, fought, made mistakes, loved and survived to build the foundations of the Golden State:

The Bastard
The Interloper
The Dancer
The Rebel
The Fixer
The Deceiver
The Wild Card

Genre: Historical Romantic Suspense

Book 1, The Bastard:

Diarmid Burwash felt the heat of the fire before he saw the flames stretching their scarlet and gold tentacles toward him. Scarlet and gold, gules and or, heart and lion, and he the stranger-in-blood who had no right to any of it. Not to his father's coat-of-arms, to the family motto, nor even to the name.

* * *

Diarmid lay rolled in his blankets on the rough wood floor, face toward the dying embers of the night fire, glowing red eyes that winked slyly at him as if to deny they were real embers from a real fire. His mother was dead these six years, he wasn't in county Ross, thank God, he was thousands of miles from Scotland.
Not only across the ocean but across all the forests and plains of America to California where gold lay in the streams like sand.

* * *

Diarmid clenched his fists. Bastard or not, he'd had a right to that land! There was no denying he was the spit and image of his father, dark they both were, hair, eyes and coloring. Little difference that had made after his father died. Malcolm Burwash was scarcely cold in his grave before The McLeod had proclaimed a bastard such as Diarmid had no rights and seized the land for himself. When fourteen-year-old Diarmid tried to fight The McLeod’s armed men, they'd knocked him senseless and fired the cottage. Watching all their belongings go up in flames had killed his mother.

Diarmid Malcolm Burwash was the only survivor. A thin smile twisted his lips. Survive he would until the time came to meet The McLeod in hell and settle the score. In the meantime, he'd find his own land. In California.

New Review for Snowed in Together by Ann Herrick

What secrets are revealed when six teens get trapped at school on a Saturday?

Wes and his best buds, Tony and Jeff, have enough brain power to fuel the entire sophomore class, but when it comes to their social lives, they are totally inept. So they volunteer to organize the art room on Saturday knowing three certain cheerleaders will be there for practice. Trouble is, none of the guys can come up with a plan to take advantage of the opportunity to be the only six students in the building.

Then, thanks to a freak snowstorm, they're snowed in, which isn't so bad when the girls of their horniest dreams are there, too. Maybe it could give Wes the chance to make his fantasies about Ellyce come true! However, the last thing Wes expects is to be caught in a game that forces everyone to share his deepest secret. He fears if Ellyce discovers the story of his alcoholic father and abandonment by his mother, she'll never want anything to do with him.

"Snowed in Together is a young adult novel that has an important message. Wes is not dealing with the things going on in his life…he is hiding them from the world. Only when the students begin to share their deepest secrets does Wes learn that he is not alone and that talking to others about his problems is important.

I really enjoyed the characters from Snowed in Together. It brought back many memories from high school as well as those awkward moments of talking with boys. I could relate to Wes and his friends. The message is very important to the story and one that each child should learn!" ~ MDOBSON, Sizzling Hot Book Reviews

Wilding Nights by Lee Killough

Homicide detective Allison Goodnight has a big problem. A rogue werewolf killed the victim in her latest case. She knows the signs; she is a werewolf, too. Her whole family is. It is urgent that she close this case without revealing the killer’s nature before humans’ racial memory of her kind awakens. But her new partner Zane Kerr is watching her with unnerving intensity. He is disturbed by her secretive behavior on this case. And when the description of a woman seen with the victim matches a number of Allison’s relatives, he has to wonder if she is trying to protect, not catch, the killer. He is determined to find out. Which could be fatal for him. If he learns too much, Allison may have to turn killer herself to protect her people.

"Fans of Killough's meticulous craftsmanship will not be disappointed. In Wilding Nights she seamlessly inserts a fully realized supernatural race into the everyday realities of Gulf Coast life. Her characters think, talk and act the way they should, lending enormous credibility to the extraordinary elements of the story. Her characters also overtake the plot in the most surprising ways. For example, the road to romance takes a quite a different path than the one you expect, but it works perfectly." ~ Jean Marie Ward, Crescent Blues Book Views

Killer Karma by Lee Killough

Inspector Cole Dunavan finds himself in the middle of a parking garage with no memory except of his murder. After remembering who he is and accepting that he is now a ghost, he has more problems. He is a ghost with no idea how being a ghost works. No one sees or hears him. He cannot move objects and initially cannot move through closed doors. He learns to his horror that his body has not been found, and everyone thinks he has run off with a woman who is actually an informant. A woman whose life he may have put in danger. He must save her, find his killer, and show his wife he has remained faithful.

"Killough keeps the action driving forward, but does not neglect character development. We get to know our protagonist's loved ones, and to care about them. We begin to understand why the antagonists do what they do. Will there be any justice? Will anyone find out what happened to him, or will they believe the false report circulating? And if they do find out, what then? Killough does not give us easy answers. The climax of Killer Karma is a marvelous crescendo, both complex and poignant." ~ Sherwood Smith

"Killough has created more than a paranormal police procedural here. This is a novel about love and redemption, about friendship and possibility. Any reader who enjoys a good mystery with strong psychological elements, compelling characters, and a fascinating storyline will relish this one. I highly recommend it." ~ Pari Noskin Taichert, Fresh Fiction web site

Blood Games by Lee Killough

Vampire Garreth Mikaelian thought he had his existence all arranged. He is comfortably settled in a town where, his nature unknown to those around him, he works the night shift as a police officer. His blood comes in bottles. He has a routine and friends. But that peace is shattered when his fellow officer and sometime lover Maggie Lebekov is killed by a lethal trio playing escalating blood games. He must locate and capture the suspects before other law enforcement officers do, to be sure they are captured alive...if not yet vampires, they have drunk his blood, and if killed will rise again even more deadly.

"This was my first Lee Killough book but not my last. I have always enjoyed a good vampire story and this one features a vampire that still has human feelings and characteristics. I need to go back and find how Garreth became a vampire and how he dealt with it." ~Sue Johnson for myshelf.com

"Lee Killough has her feet firmly planted in the mystery and horror genres. If you like Laurel Hamilton and Anne Rice, then Garreth is right up your alley." ~ Sandy Tooley
